Season 5 of The Crown isn’t the only royal Netflix show set to make a splash this year. This December, die-hard royal family followers are in for a treat. A documentary series following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will soon be Netflix’s latest royal endeavor.

The six-episode, two-volume, docuseries—fittingly named Harry & Meghan—is part of the couple’s multi-year production deal with Netflix. Now, viewers around the world will catch a further glimpse into the couple’s story. And, after the bombshells from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s March 2021 interview with Oprah, this multi-episode long series is bound to bubble up some royal controversies.

Here’s everything we know about the highly anticipated series so far.

When will the Meghan and Harry docuseries air?

Get your popcorn ready, because Netflix will officially release Volume I of the docuseries on Thursday, Dec. 8. Volume II will be released on Dec. 15. Each volume contains three episodes each, meaning viewers can easily binge the series for all the ins and outs of the Sussex story. Along with Prince Harry’s impending memoir, Spare, hitting bookstore shelves shortly after on Jan. 10, 2023, there’s no doubt that some new royal family scandals may be in our future.

Who is directing the docuseries?

Oscar-nominated documentary director Liz Garbus is the director at the helm of the docuseries. In addition to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s docuseries, Garbus has directed films that highlight icons like Marilyn Monroe, Nina Simone and Bobby Fischer.

“It’s nice to be able to trust someone with our story—a seasoned director whose work I’ve long admired—even if it means it may not be the way we would have told it,” Markle said about working with Garbus in an interview with Variety. “But that’s not why we’re telling it. We’re trusting our story to someone else, and that means it will go through their lens.”

What will the docuseries be about?

In an official press release for the series, Netflix offers viewers a summary of what to expect amongst the six vulnerable episodes: “The series explores the clandestine days of their early courtship and the challenges that led to them feeling forced to step back from their full-time roles in the institution.”

“With commentary from friends and family,” the press release continues, “most of whom have never spoken publicly before about what they witnessed, and historians who discuss the state of the British Commonwealth today and the royal family’s relationship with the press, the series does more than illuminate one couple’s love story, it paints a picture of our world and how we treat each other.”

With a summary like that, there’s no doubt more than a few monarchy bombshells will drop. Accompanied by taglines from the latest trailer ranging from “it’s a dirty game,” to “no one knows the full truth,” and “what on Earth happened?” some of the series revelations may make excellent future storylines of The Crown.

Additionally, more specific details surrounding the series have been speculated on. Page Six alleges that the series has been in the works for months and that cameras followed the two throughout 2021. Film locations have reportedly included their Montecito, California, home and New York City.

In an interview with The Cut, Markle specified that she does not consider the series to be a reality series. Instead, she describes the project as a love story that the couple has not been able to share with audiences.

What kind of love story will the series portray?

“So much of how my husband and I see things is through our love story,” Markle said in her Variety interview. “I think that’s what people around the world connected to, especially with our wedding.” And Markle isn’t wrong. The couple’s wedding captured the world and made history in multiple ways.

“People love love,” the Duchess affirms. “And our definition of love is really expansive: partner love, self-love, the love of community and family. We use that as the baseline of the kind of shows and documentaries we want out there. I hope that is the sentiment that people feel when they see any of the content or the projects that we are working on.”
